To the delight of many-a-White South African – US swears in a racist president today!
For 47 years-or-so – the practice of apartheid made South Africa the pariah of the world. The international eye really got focused on South Africa and apartheid when the Vietnam War ended. With nothing left to protest, and civil rights purportedly enacted in US – it was S. Africa’s turn to be the black sheep of racism (pun intended).
Now that South Africans like Elon Musk, Trevor Noah and Patrick Soon-Shiong are asserting themselves on the world stage (remember Christian Barnard and Gary Player performed under the pall of apartheid) — I would like to pose some postulates regarding the forced separation of Black and White S. Africans over the 47 years of apartheid.
I am certainly not trying to whitewash apartheid (another pun): Black freedom fighters did not deserve the horrible torture(s) inflicted upon them by the S. African police (secret and not-so-secret). Ironically, White S. Africa got the blueprint for apartheid from US very own Jim Crow laws — levied on a minority population from 1877-1964 — whereas White S. Africa controlled who used which bathroom from 1948 til 1994 — for a majority population!!
Did Jim Crow “attitudes” disappear in 1964 with the Civil Rights act? Not bloody likely. Similarly, there will be no getting around economic apartheid for the majority of S. African Blacks (who currently outnumber the White minority in S. Africa 11 : 1).
All of which leads me to the title of this attempt — to potentially lift some of the moral burden from White South Africans like it has for US and Australia. (I have written elsewhere about racism in Australia.)
Though apartheid was fueled by Henrik Verwoerd — this S. African prime minister was probably prodded by the Brits and US to do so. Only now — amidst renewed Middle East turmoil — are many Americans learning how the Anglos use proxy governments to maintain control over oil and mineral-rich regions of the world. (Some of us have known this for a long time!)
Every white, male S. African was expected to do 2 years in the military following his matriculation from high school (Elon Musk got out of the country before doing his service) — ostensibly to keep the Cubans and Russian-backed “freedom fighters” from influencing oil-rich Angola into becoming a communist enclave and driving the British, American and Dutch oil companies out of Angola — where they had been doing profitable business (and continue to do so to this very day).
And I haven’t even brought up gold and diamonds yet!
What if apartheid was promulgated by the Brits and Americans to not only keep control of Angolan oil — but also to enable S. Africa to patrol the Southern Seaways? Being that the Black population outnumbered Whites 5-to-1 during post WWII — Marxist and other “communist” countries definitely had interest in one-of-the-world’s wealthiest countries: a country that at one time accounted for 90% of the world’s gold and diamond production.
It is no longer a secret that Israel supplied S. Africa with nukes in 1972 — most probably to the delight of the Brits and US. Israel certainly had vested interests in S. Africa (recall the aforementioned gold and diamonds) and could co-opt the S. African Navy without the Brits and US getting black eyes for supporting racist S. Africa (more punning?).
When political power in S. Africa shifted from White to Black — these nukes went back to Israel.
So, in a nutshell – if S. Africans would like a plausible excuse for apartheid –I’ve just given them one that they may have some truth to it: We were helping the Americans and the Brits stop the spread of communism!
