American Zombie

I’m pretty sure that I’ve suggested this before: that Halloween has supplanted Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving as the number one American Holiday – (I haven’t seen many stores around that are dedicated to the other 3 holidays) — but there are Halloween stores all over the place!

And it seems fitting — as the average American has become a zombie — simply consuming like there is no tomorrow (which looks bleaker by the day) — oblivious to anything but the consumption of…now I know that we haven’t resorted to cannibalism just quite yet…but we do follow a conditioned existence of constant, careless, consumption of anything and everything.

Not enough Americans are thinking outside the box: the tsunami is upon us…there is no turning back…we’ve-run-out-of-tricks to-turn-a-buck (aside from invading Canada [and what the Hell is this planned dirty, oil pipeline the Oiligarchy is planning for us {potentially zombiefying us quicker than I expected!}?]).

Zombieism lends itself to US: we did, after all, found this country on human flesh – whether it was the Red Man or the Brown Man or the Black Man.  Yes, yes — I am fully aware of how many White Men died in our own civil war — that some folks tell me was all about the Rothschilds trying to get the Rockefellers back into the fold — but the casualities were zombies themselves — slavishly following orders to seek blood.

I told a newly found, old friend that I was going to write on “American Anomie” for this particular article – that luverly concept coined by the French sociologist, Emile Durkheim that suggests an overall, societal sensation, of hopelessness and depression: akin to “The Never Ending Story’s,” The Nothing – but I was quite sure that that title wouldn’t be as fetching as “American Zombie”: after all – one-of-the-current, top-rated TV shows features zombies: “The Walking Dead, “ and, the intrepid band of non-zombies attempting to survive (perhaps there are clues embedded in the clichéd script for us to escape the affliction?).

Sadly, everything that I encounter in the U.S. melting pot of pro football (and basketball) and baseball and hockey; the Tea Party; Herman and Rick; rising health care; the illusionary greenback; unemployment; a-couple-hundred-thousand servicemen coming home; selling $500,000 homes as the price of a U.S. visa; Obamacare and, Jack Abramoff telling me how easy it is to buy a U.S. Congressman – point to complete zombiefication.

This is about as “scary” as I can get for an Halloween Op-Ed: a Country without a happy, near future.  And in Michael Lewis (the author of The Blind Side and Moneyball) I feel I have found a kindred spirit who feels that we just haven’t hit rock bottom yet – and, as soon as the pain gets too intense, Americans will finally make the necessary and sufficient changes to right our ship.

In zombie terms, I can only imagine that those zombiefied will consume enough rich, padded flesh – that they will indeed become satiated and the zombie disease will be cured.

And while my mother agrees that most Americans have become zombies – she disagrees with the Occupy Wall Street movement hoping the fat zombies feast on the lean ones.  I, on the other hand – fervently hope that the lean zombies eventually surround the fat zombies (gorged on human flesh and eternally wanting more) – and…and…and eat the rich.  When the lean zombies become satiated, perhaps they will be cured, or, will they simply begin feasting on the more lean?
