Publisher Arash suggested that I do something special for article #100. I can’t believe that this is the 100th essay/article/op-ed that I’ve penned…gosh, it’s been almost 2 years of writing at The Doctor’s Inn – so I’ve managed some 60,000 words in the past couple-of-years – which I know wouldn’t impress Anthony Trollope who kicked out about 3000-words each morning – but still keeps the screws on me.
Still, with everything else I gotta do (and I’m sure Trollope didn’t) – I’m rather happy and proud to be 100 essays/articles/op-eds old! Happy literary birthday me! (I just can’t promise you anything extra-special, Arash.)
Went to Niece Gaby’s graduation from culinary arts school last weekend (when I should have posted this here article), and, here’s hoping that all-of-the-class gets cooking jobs. They put a great meal on-for-us…but they ran-out-of-wine!
Just came back from a Rosary for the deceased father of a fellow faculty member and friend of Giti’s. At least 300 people were at the mortuary and at least 100-of-us stood outside – unable to get inside the mortuary chapel. It was a very cool experience to see how Catholicism has stood the test of time with the Hispanic population of Oxnard. I never met the deceased – but he was the father of 9 and apparently a man worth saying goodbye to…
So it was 99 articles ago that I wrote “The Last Box”; and, I finally opened the last box the other day – and it is absolutely chock full of paper stuff! Hopefully, on the first cool Autumn weekend (because we’ve had a brutally hot Indian Summer – that stops me from wanting to do ANYTHING), and, when I’m caught up on everything else I’m doing – I can finally go through that box to see if I can find that seminal ADD article – because my new class at CSUN is presenting me with all sorts of internet researched bullshit (at my behest) on ADHD. Actually, one enterprising student managed to find an article that does put the socio-historical development of the alleged condition into the proper DSM IV perspective. And, at the very least, I hope that my students are becoming better critical analysts of internet information – before deciding to consume something.
And here I am, still attempting to get acid-laced metaphors fired off with machine-gun imagery like PJ O’Rourke used to. Man could that guy write! There’s also another young buck in the employment of “Rolling Stone” who writes on a par with PJ – but this fellow’s name quite escapes me. Anyways…here’s hoping that if I write long enough – I will eventually become as good as PJ. Actually, another reason Publisher Arash (and I can’t thank him enough) was able to get me to commit to this column/blog/website – was because I was also trying to motivate 2 friends (Big Steve C and Dante) – both-of-whom are much better “phrasers” of the the English Language than I am. But Big Steve C gets lost in internet surfing, and Dante is chasing women in Brazil – both of which are laudable pursuits – but hardly exercises in English prosody…and as we all know – we get good at what we practice.
Well…I’m still practicing at getting “beyond the pale, “and welcoming Davey M. back into my mix while thanking Tami A. for kicking ass where it needs to be kicked.
Here’s to Life and many more years of good Chardonnays…
