A former principal had an interesting poster put up in the faculty room which featured a baby crawling on the floor with a bullseye on his/her diaper. The caption read: When budget cuts are made — they always go for the easiest target.
So when I learned that the LAPD writes up many more jaywalking citations than moving violation citations — I found this dynamic fitting perfectly with the theme of the poster and donut-shop cop culture: Always go for the easiest score!
Gosh, while I\’m on the LAPD — I may as well stick with them…
They recently shot a Trader Joe\’s manager to death because, because, because…because they\’re trigger happy (or they don\’t shoot well?). I\’ll go with the latter — particularly after they killed a woman who had been taken hostage and her kidnapper. Hollywood would have had the kidnapper taken out with a clean head shot or a bullet through the hostage (doing her little damage).
I have mentioned elsewhere (\’On Lying)\’ that I got a $1000 citation on campus for parking in a handicapped slot. I was set up by an LAPD cop\’s daughter — who just saw a lazy, left-wing, liberal prof taking advantage of the many open handicap slots (he actually could find no faculty parking and did have someone else\’s legitimate handicap sticker. Never mind that there are campus police and sheriffs who don\’t bother themselves with this stuff: but I was easy money for her LAPD Dad.
Of course all this pales-in-comparison (double entendre?) with the epidemic of shooting unarmed Black men (which I have addressed elsewhere). Not that I don\’t feel for the families of-the-two-women I have just mentioned — you just can\’t talk about police shootings without mentioning this bloody fact.
One must beg the question: How many armed Black men are shot by the police? An unarmed Black man is as easy a target as a crawling baby.
So I propose more training for cops! Four years minimum!! Seriously, when you have the power of life and death in your hands — it would be nice to get the equivalency of a bachelor\’s degree before getting to wear a gun to earn one\’s living! With additional education you might not always be afraid for your life?!
Those of us who become parents take on a more difficult job than the police — and we are all rank amateurs in this job! This should not be the same scenario for cops. We parents already know that parenting not only makes idiots of us — but that it\’s a relationship ready made for lifelong-finger-pointing.
And I\’ve seen enough cop screw-ups that have irrevocably changes the course of peoples\’ lives too!
4 years of training please!!
Make the first year free! Then they can start earning a stipend, or internship pay, for the next 2 years. Then they can start earning a salary in their 4th year.
A member of the LAPD lives in my neighborhood (and he seems to know who I am). We met after my neighbors experienced a home invasion robbery and he came to see if my security cameras had picked up on the activity next door. He scared the Hell out of me when he asked me if I was Stephen Scheff.
I never could figure out how \”they\” know how to identify the non troublemakers (notice how I didn\’t refer to myself as the \’good guy\’) — but can\’t seem to get a handle on stopping the bad guyz before they do bad.
But now I know — they always go for the easiest target.
