The Last American Hero

September 26, 2018

The president doth protest too much, methinks.

This attempt is NOT about Jeff Bridges or William Katt (recall \’The Greatest American Hero\’?) — it\’s about THE greatest — and LAST — REAL American hero.  There will never be another John McCain — and with his departure from this mortal coil — we have been left with nothing but spineless dip shits pretending they give a flying fuck about US.

A hero should be brave, strong, courageous, honest and not afraid of death.  Who better fits this description in the U.S. of A.?

Some people would suggest that it was easy for John McCain to accomplish and endure what he did — because he came from money.

But money certainly didn\’t get Capt. McCain his fighter pilot stature; nor did it help him survive torture and those years in a POW camp when he did not want to abandon his men.  It certainly didn\’t prolong his life…or perhaps it did to a point…I recall some years back that he had a massively swollen jaw that appeared to be a cancer (at least to me).  A former colleague had a similar swelling of the jaw and was diagnosed with jaw cancer (odd that they both spent time in that-part-of-the-world: One to fight the Viet Cong — and One preferring the exotic pleasures afforded there).

U.S. Navy Captain McCain was a hero to me when he disinvited Don the Con from his funeral.  And while this would have been the only factor necessary to elicit happiness from me — his daughter\’s eulogy moved me to another level of happiness!  I exalted in her zero tolerance of Don the Con!  A heroic Family!  Go, Beowulf!!

I don\’t know how many of my readers are Vietnam Vets or Vets of other wars, but I know for a fact that once-upon-a-time, the majority of America\’s homeless were Vietnam Vets (who were unable to reintegrate into an unsupportive society).  Though I don\’t know for sure — I\’m willing to bet that Viet Nam Vets still comprise the majority of our homeless.

I don\’t see Don the Con doing anything for our Vets — Capt. McCain did what he could.

From the mid-70s into about 1980 I met many Vets who tried to outrun the demons of war (to no avail!).  I did meet a-couple-of-guys who had put the horrific experience into some type of livable perspective.  But most of these guys — and those I saw in \”group\” in the mid-1990s — were more like the Tommy Lee Jones character in Between Heaven and Earth.

Capt. McCain came out of the horrific Viet Nam experience as a seemingly better man — and went on to serve his country, again!  (Unlike Don the Con and the host he has surrounded himself with.)

I can\’t see a battle-hardened veteran play sycophant to The Con.  Was General Kelly battle-hardened?  Did he write the anonymous letter??

Though I disagreed with Capt. McCain\’s politics — and the insane decision to have Sarah Palin as a running mate — I admired him for his old school patriotism — seasoned in Viet Nam mud! Quite unlike Don the Con\’s flatfooted pretenses at patriotism: complaining about NFL players taking a knee.  Johnny M. was the real deal!

I wonder how Johnny M. would have handled the Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court nomination?  I\’m pretty sure that The Last American Hero would have recognized Kavanaugh for the ball less fraternity punk he is.

And this is what we are left with Capt. McCain — a bunch of chicken-shit scurvy knaves.  You left US too soon…perhaps you can keep serving from your new vantage point?
