It’s getting so you can’t pray anymore – without the possibility of being killed in church. Actually, I guess you’d have to be a doctor performing abortions to worry about this. These pro-Lifers (a.k.a. anti abortionists) are really a-bunch-of-sanctimonious hypocrites. Let’s send them all to war – better yet, let’s have the pro-Lifers work exclusively in the orphanages, homeless shelters, jails and prisons. What-a-bunch idiots along Limbaughian proportions – thinking that they should have a say in what a woman wishes to do with her god-given body!
I read a science article many years ago that suggested that a pregnant rabbit, that recognized that environmental conditions were not conducive to bringing young into the world, could re-absorb the fetuses into their system, i.e., literally auto-digest their young as a food source to survive harsh conditions. Similarly – I’m not sure what percentage of first time pregnancies are miscarried (though I’m betting it’s at least 33% of them) – but even we humans seem to have the capacity of realizing when conditions may-or-may-not be opportune for child bearing and child rearing.
As most of my readers know – I work in juvenile prison – and most of the incarcerated youth I spend my time with each day – are there because either one, or both of their parents, simply didn’t have the time to spend with them. Am I suggesting that all those who run afoul of the law should have been aborted and then we would have no crime? No. I’m not! Yeah, yeah – I’ve heard the whole Beethoven thang (more than once) and I’m not buying it. And yes – I’ve heard the Hitler spiel as well. What I am suggesting, however – is to make it as difficult to breed as it is to secure a top-level security clearance, or, well – to get a driver’s license. Let’s face it, the vast majority of people (and I stand among them) are not suited to be parents to children. I understood the cultural necessity of bearing many children — once-upon-a-time – but I don’t see it as a species mandate any longer…
My 87-year-old former neighbor once described her “back alley” abortion to me — that was performed in Florida during World War II. Her husband had gone off to the European (or was it the Japanese?) theater and she learned that she was pregnant not long after his departure. She didn’t know if he would survive the war – and she certainly didn’t want to be saddled with a child during the war. The conditions of the WWII abortion clinic sounded absolutely horrific as she related them to me. She, herself, was forever scarred by this frightening and unsanitary experience. Surely a sterile, antiseptic termination of an unwanted vehicle (because let’s face it – these bodies are only vehicles – you can always get another one) is preferable to setting a being up for a life in which it isn’t wanted?
I read another strange statistic (from the early 1980s, I believe) and this report suggested that a Russian woman had an average of 27 abortions during her lifetime – as an abortion was literally cheaper than contraception (doesn’t make a-whole-lot-of-sense to me – but it’s what I read). And another report I once read suggested that 20% of all pregnancies were terminated during the American Wild West days.
I challenge all pro-Lifers to rescue all unwanted children and raise them as their own. That should solve the problem: everyone will get what they want: no abortion clinics, nobody getting killed – and, initially unwanted children, living in lovely, supportive and nurturing homes
